This is the third installment of our “My Israel Story” series. All week, we’ll be sharing personal photos and stories from our staff about their connection to Israel in honor of Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) and Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day) on May 10-12. We look forward to sharing even more of our Israel stories and experiences this summer at camp!

“Very rarely do we get to meet people who have inspired an entire nation. Together with my cohort of twenty-one Nachshon Project Fellows, I had the incredible opportunity to speak with former President and Prime Minister of Israel, Shimon Peres. I expected the conversation to be mostly about all of President Peres’s amazing accomplishments, including winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his work on the Oslo Accords. However, he did not once mention something great that he did, but instead kept emphasizing that we can, and should, be great Jewish leaders in North America. He also insisted that it is imperative to live by the Jewish moral code and Jewish values. Perhaps the most inspiring words he shared were when he was asked about his biggest accomplishment. He said, ‘My biggest accomplishment is what I will accomplish tomorrow.’ I am inspired by these words to live Judaism and dream big so that the world can be a better and more peaceful place.”
